8th Beer Cheese Festival ‘best yet’

Despite one of the hottest weekends of the year, organizers are deeming this year’s Beer Cheese Festival as “the best yet.”

Main Street Winchester Director Rachel Alexander said visitors were pleased with all the festival had to offer, from live music, Kentucky Proud venders, arts and crafts and food in every direction you turned.

She said the hot weather may have kept some from descending on Main Street as it was transformed into Beer Cheese Boulevard Saturday. “Wristband sales were slightly down from last year, which we are attributing to the extreme heat,” she said. “But sales were still up about 14 percent from 2014’s festival, so we are pleased.”

She said after eight years, the festival has made a name for itself as a “super special and quirky event” not to be missed. “We expect it to continue to grow each year,” she said. “All of the proceeds from the festival are reinvested in downtown Winchester, so we couldn’t be happier with the growth of the festival.

“We are also excited to showcase our beautiful downtown and our incredible small businesses to visitors. It is generally the biggest day of the year for our retail establishments and restaurants and kicks of the summer retail season in a big way.”

She said the festival is truly a community effort.

“We have the best committee and volunteers,” she said. “The support we get from the city and county is incredible — everyone from Public Works to the courthouse staff goes above and beyond to ensure that the festival is fun for everyone.”

During the festival more than a dozen beer cheese vendors set up along Beer Cheese Boulevard to offer samples to festival-goers. With a $5 wristband, visitors could taste the samples and vote for their favorite.

Hall’s on the River, who lays claim to the original beer cheese recipe, took home the People’s Choice Award honors this year. A blind taste-testing panel judged entries on a variety of points including taste, texture and color, Alexander said.
